Born in Wales, James began to study the piano at the age of six and within a year had joined Newport Cathedral Choir as a chorister. He toured as a principal cast member with Music Theatre Wales, performed at the Enthronement of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and was awarded a Choral Scholarship to Rougemont School.
James gained the Dip. ABRSM in Musical Performance at 18, and subsequently graduated with First Class Honours in Music & Sound Recording (BMus Tonmeister) at the University of Surrey in 2013, where he studied piano with Margaret Roberts, and performance with Clive Williamson. Whilst at university, James won the Croser-Hughes Chamber Music prize, was awarded several performance scholarships, and was Musical Director for the University Musical Theatre Society.
“James Taylor’s band on the night deserve top marks. On stage throughout they pumped through a staggering array of 70’s schock (oops I meant classics) and it was incredibly hard to not get your groove on throughout.” DISASTER The Musical - BritishTheatre.com
